Quem está?

Cinara Saiónára

Upa | February 2023 | 26 pages | 15,5 × 17,5 cm | lift-the-flap softcover book

A playful lift-the-flap book inspired by a traditional Portuguese nursery rhyme, inviting young readers to peek inside a lively house full of surprises.

Who’s there? On the chimney, the roof, the window, or the garden gate? With rhythmic, rhyming text, each page reveals a new animal visitor—from a stork balancing on one leg to a spotted cat on the roof and a bright yellow duck by the window.

As children lift the flaps and explore every corner of the house, they discover a joyful parade of characters brought to life through Cinara Saiónára’s vibrant, animal-inspired illustrations.

Who’s There? is a delightful interactive picture book that celebrates curiosity, rhythm, and the fun of guessing what might be hiding just around the corner.

Cinara Saiónára (Portugal) is an illustrator who also works in cinema.

  • The independent publisher UPA Editora has specialised in picture books for the youngest readers in its catalogue, which currently contains just a few titles. These are characterized by simplicity and original illustrations. In »Quem está?« each double-page spread features a rhyming couplet about an animal and the question »Who is there?« The answer is hidden under a flap that must be lifted to reveal the correct animal – a cat on a roof, a donkey in a vegetable patch or a peacock at the garden gate. The simple, repetitive text form is catchy and invites children (and adults) to follow suit and make up rhymes about other animals and places. What sets this book apart from many others for this age group are the illustrations and the design. The paintings, using a mixed technique of ink and gouache, are delicate, witty and playful. The typography is inventive, and the thick matte paper is pleasantly tactile. Although unassuming at first glance, this is a little gem of a book. (Age: 2+) [JW]
