This book was both written and illustrated by Vera Ermolaeva (1893-1937), one of the most outstanding artists of the Russian avant-garde. Not only was she a practicing artist but also one of the most prominent theoreticians. She managed a laboratory of colour in the famous State University of the Arts supervised by Malevich. Ermolaeva illustrated poems by Kharms, Vvedensky, Zabolotsky.
Published in 1929, DOGS is organised in a rather simple manner: a concise text tells a story of an exhibition during which a boy is drawing the pets he liked in his notebook. However, there are so many amusing dogs taking part in the exhibition that he is forced to draw more and more of them on each page of the notebook.
