Bertrand Editora | NOVEMBER 2024 | 112 PAGES | 14,9 X 23,6 CM | softcover

With illustrations by the master hand of André Carrilho, this is an edition of excellence of a timeless classic!

“When one morning Gregor Samsa woke up from restless dreams, he found himself in his bed transformed into a monstrous insect.’” In one of the most influential works of literary fiction of the 20th century, Kafka starts from the terrible and unexpected transformation of Gregor to reflect on the themes that characterize all his work: the loneliness, the behavior of human beings and their impotence when confronted with the absurd, without forgetting the frustration in the face of an increasingly bureaucratic society, oppressive and dehumanized.

The 20 illustrations (including front and back cover) that accompany the original text, visually underline key scenes and concepts of the book. Following Kafka’s stated wishes in a letter to his editor, the illustrations never clearly depict the insect, leaving us to imagine it. Pencil drawings are combined with watercolour effects that add visual chaos and uncertainty. Instead of exposing what the text describes, the illustrations focus on the text’s underlying themes, a conceptual visual commentary. Printed in two spot colors (green and bordeaux) the story of The Metamorphosis can be seen in a new yet faithful way, alongside the timeless words of Franz Kafka
