Today, many of us can study, vote, work, make decisions about our own bodies, and speak out against the violence we were once forced to remain silent about. These rights did not come about by chance. They are the result of centuries of struggle, of voices that spoke out when it seemed impossible, of alliances forged in silence, and of acts of resistance that paved the way for generations of women to come.

This book explores these transformations and the history behind them: the history of women and feminist movements around the world that helped make possible many of the rights, freedoms, and advances that some of us enjoy today. It is also an invitation to appreciate both the path we have travelled and the one that still lies ahead.
